Moving to a new house or changing schools—these are exciting but often nerve-wracking experiences for adults.
For children, however, they can feel even bigger.
When it means saying goodbye to a beloved friend they’ve played with every day at kindergarten, the emotions can be overwhelming.
At this age, children don’t yet have phone numbers or social media to help them stay in touch.
And simply saying “goodbye” isn’t always enough to help them understand or process what they’re feeling.
So, as a parent, how can you support your child during this time?
Goodbyes Begin with “Preparation”
Goodbyes are easier when children have time to prepare themselves emotionally.
In our family, once the moving date was set, we marked it on the calendar right away. Then, together, we counted down the days: “Just five days left… four days left…”
By visualizing the moment ahead, my daughter seemed calmer and more ready when the day finally came.
Ways to Say “Thank You” and “See You Again”
There are simple yet meaningful ways for children to express their feelings while gently working through them:
✓Make Goodbye Cards
Choosing, decorating, and writing cards for each friend gave my daughter precious time to reflect on her friendships and say goodbye in her own way.
✓Pick a Small Gift
A small present chosen by the child themselves can carry a lot of meaning — and can help ease their own heart as well.
✓Use the Power of Storybooks
Picture books about change or farewells can help children understand, process, and express their emotions in a comforting way.

When Anxiety Arises in a New Environment
After transferring to her new kindergarten, my daughter often said things like:
“I liked my old school better.”
“I want to see my friend again.”
Hearing those words made my heart ache — but I realized they were also signs of her growing and learning to navigate change.
“I know… you were always together, weren’t you?”
“New places can feel scary at first, but little by little they start to feel warm and familiar — like stepping into a hot bath.”
Through gentle conversations like these, she gradually began to accept and settle into her new world.
Goodbyes at Melodies International Kindergarten & Nursery
At Melodies International Kindergarten and Nursery, goodbyes are a natural part of daily life.
Many of our families are expatriates, which means children often transfer in and out — sometimes almost every month.
During farewell gatherings —
Homeroom teachers present handmade cards, and albums filled with memories.
These keepsakes allow children to hold onto their time at Melodies — turning their experiences into a lasting source of comfort, confidence, and strength for the future.
A Goodbye Is Not Only Sadness
While farewells can feel lonely, they are also opportunities for growth.
The wish to say “I loved being with you” or “Thank you” enriches a child’s heart.
It’s okay to cry. It’s okay if it takes time.
What matters most is helping children recognize their emotions and share them with someone they trust.
With a parent by their side saying, “I understand how you feel,” children find the courage to take their next step.
Even small goodbyes can become big milestones in a child’s journey.
At Melodies, we hope that every goodbye becomes a cherished memory — one that continues to support and strengthen each child as they move toward their bright, promising future.
